5-Step French Onion Tofu Dip
Plant based onion dip? Heck YES! This recipe for 5-Step French Onion Tofu Dip (check it out below!) is super creamy, but lighter than sour cream — and it’s very oniony, with that classic onion dip sweetness.
Since it’s made with tofu, it’s protein rich and vegan. Honestly, though, even non-vegans love this dip; in the test kitchen, even our tofu-haters were coming back for seconds.
It’s amazing with chips, where all the flavors and textures collide: salty and sweet, crispy and creamy. It’s great served cold, so you can make it ahead of time and serve it with veggies, too.
Heads up, this recipe makes a lot, so it’s awesome for parties, and a must-have for the big game this weekend. Seriously, this dip will be the first to disappear. Leftovers? Probably not — it’s that good. But if you happen to have any left at the end of the party, trust us: it will be amazing on a sandwich.
Here’s the recipe:
Heat 2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil in a large skillet over low heat. Stir in 4 thinly sliced yellow onions, 2 minced garlic cloves, 1 tsp granulated sugar, and ½ tsp salt. Cover and cook, stirring occasionally, until well caramelized, about 50 minutes.
Set the onions aside to cool to room temperature, 15 minutes.
In a blender, combine the caramelized onions, 14 oz soft tofu, ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil, 2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar, 1 Tbsp tamari, 1 Tbsp white miso paste, 1 tsp kosher salt, and 1 tsp freshly squeezed lemon juice.
Blend until smooth, 2 minutes.
Transfer to a bowl and garnish with chopped parsley and chives. Serve at room temperature or cold with chips, bread, and crudités. Enjoy!
