GELSON’S PARTNERS WITH EXPANDING LIST OF LOCAL COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS TO HOLD ANNUAL HOLIDAY FOOD & TOY DRIVES ACROSS ALL LOCATIONS IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

 

Encino, Calif. (November 15, 2017) – Among the most worthwhile holiday traditions – giving back to your local community – Gelson’s will hold its annual holiday food and toy drives across all of its locations in Southern California. The food drive runs through November 26, while the toy drive will launch November 28 and run through Friday, December 8.

 

Local partners for the food drive include APLA, Community Center of La Canada, Feeding San Diego, Food Finders, Food Share, FIND, Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, Second Harvest, and Unity Shoppe, in addition to MANNA Food Bank, a new partner for the Thousand Oaks location. In addition to the food bins and shopping lists of needed items available at all locations, on weekend afternoons, volunteers from several of these organizations are scheduled to assist Gelson’s customers with finding specific food items to buy and contribute at select stores.

 

“Returning partner organizations for the toy drive include Barbara Sinatra Center for Abused Children at Eisenhower Medical Center, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Children’s Hospital of Orange County, Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego, Ronald McDonald House/Long Beach, and Toys for Tots. As in years past, Gelson’s will have bins with suggested toy lists made available. At the end of the promotion, employees visit several children’s hospitals to hand out toys, and other partners will pick up the toys directly.”

 

Gelson’s has long held in-store food drives to contribute to the communities it serves, while regularly giving to food banks and other worthwhile causes, more than $2 million in donations each year. This year marks its third annual toy drive, spurred by a Gelson’s employee whose son was seriously ill and has since regained his health.

GELSON’S RANCHO MISSION VIEJO TO LAUNCH ON THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 30

 

Encino, Calif. (November 1, 2017) – Gelson’s Markets, one of California’s premier supermarket chains, today announced the upcoming launch of its newest store, in Rancho Mission Viejo. The South Orange County store, located at 30721 Gateway Place, will open its doors on Thursday, November 30.

 

The first store in Orange County to feature a cold-pressed juice bar kiosk, marking Gelson’s recently announced partnership with East Coast juice brand Liquiteria, the Rancho Mission Viejo store will offer a dining area adjacent to Gelson’s Kitchen, where patrons can customize breakfast items like omelets, and lunch and dinner bowls, with Mediterranean-inspired ingredients; Wolfgang Puck Build-Your-Own Pizza, a new concept for Gelson’s offering a la carte toppings to customize store-baked pizzas; and sushi, seafood and tapas bars, with shareable small plates and freshly shucked oysters, daily-prepared sushi, seafood soups and more, in addition to a self-serve poke bar.

 

Along with a Renaud’s Bakery and coffee bar, Gelson’s Rancho Mission Viejo will feature a full-service deli, charcuterie station, gourmet cheese area, hot food bar, soup and salad bar, and olive cart. A new cutting and juicing kiosk in the produce department will also offer cut fruit, fresh-squeezed juices, and bottled juices from preferred partners. Patrons can enjoy the convenience of an in-store pharmacy as well as a full-service floral department and custom & ready-made gift baskets.

GELSON’S MARKETS TO CELEBRATE GRAND OPENING OF THOUSAND OAKS STORE ON SEPTEMBER 22

 

Encino, Calif. (August 2, 2017) – Gelson’s Markets, one of California’s premier supermarket chains, is excited to open its first store in Thousand Oaks, located at 1736 E. Avenida de Los Arboles, Thousand Oaks, CA 91362, on Friday, September 22. This is the second location in Conejo Valley/Ventura County following its first in Westlake Village.

 

The highly anticipated opening will commence with a ribbon cutting at 9 a.m. In addition to making donations to local charity organizations, Gelson’s will thank its first 50 customers with a special gift bag valued at $20. Customers will be able to enjoy live music at the first three days of the store’s opening in the afternoon (hours TBD). All customers will have the opportunity to sample featured merchandise and dishes throughout opening week.

GELSON’S SPICES THINGS UP WITH SEASONAL HATCH CHILE ROASTING/TASTING EVENTS

 

Encino, Calif. (August 1, 2017) – The highly-anticipated Hatch Chile seasonal celebration at Gelson’s returns with weekly in-store events that include complimentary onsite roasting, sampling of hatch chile favorites, contests and giveaways.

Grown in Hatch, New Mexico, Hatch Chiles are a mildly hot and savory pepper that, when perfectly roasted, yields a uniquely delicious flavor, both spicy and sweet. While the Hatch Chile Festival annually attracts thousands of visitors from around the world to this small farming community every Labor Day weekend, Gelson’s brings its own festival to pepper-loving customers across Southern California.

 

“During this brief season each year, Gelson’s hosts “Hatch Chile Roasting Events” at several Southern California locations. Activities include sampling Hatch Chile specialty items, learning about the growing process from produce experts, and receiving cooking ideas from Gelson’s staff. Among its special Service Deli items, try the Hatch Chile Salad, Hatch Chile Cheese, Hatch Chile Cornbread, Hatch Chile Sausage or Hatch Chile Quiche for a flavor pop that enhances these classic dishes. Gelson’s staff will be onsite roasting fresh Hatch Chiles roasted for free for inclusion in your home recipes: from omelets and baked chicken to salsa and guacamole. Roasting will take place in all locations with outdoor parking (with the exception of Century City (Aug. 27) and Marina del Rey (Sept. 10) that will have larger, in-store sampling events in lieu of onsite chile roasting.

Corn breeder and Amaize discoverer George “Colonel of Corn” Crookham will hold in-store demonstrations of how to prepare his tasty creation July 20 and 21

 

Los Angeles, Calif. (May 26, 2017) WHO: George Crookham, the “Colonel of Corn,” is the creator of a special, hard-to-find variety of extra-crispy, extra-crunchy white sweet corn called Amaize. Crookham is the fourth generation of his family, who founded Idaho-based Crookham Company, to work breeding corn. The “Colonel” spent 22 years looking for the ultimate ear of corn: a corn with a tender, succulent kernel that would never go mushy; and a clean, sugar-sweet taste. When he tasted his first ear of Amaize, he knew his search was over.

 

WHAT: Crookham will be making appearances at Gelson’s stores to let shoppers know what is so special about his white corn. He’ll be talking to people about how he developed Amaize without using GMO techniques, by relying on the same corn-breeding methods used by the three previous generations of his family. He’ll let shoppers taste Amaize raw, so they can see for themselves how it’s juicy and tender enough to be eaten without cooking. He’ll also give recipes and demonstrations on how to cook the hard-to-find corn, which is only available during the limited summer season.

 

WHY: Crookham wants to get the word out to corn-lovers that Amaize is making a special appearance at Gelson’s stores in Los Angeles. The corn has only been available for the last six years, and in restricted supply—seed stock is limited, and it’s important to the Colonel that customers only encounter Amaize at its fresh-picked best. Amaize will only be available for a limited time, and these are the only places to buy it in the region.

GELSON’S TO CELEBRATE 5TH ANNUAL CALIFORNIA AVOCADO MONTH IN JUNE

 

Encino, Calif. (May 24, 2017) – We slice it in salads, spread it on toast, mash it into guacamole. Avocado has become “America’s favorite fruit,” according to the California Avocado Commission, heralding the Golden State for producing close to 90% of the nation’s avocado crop. And with peak avocado season only weeks away, Gelson’s looks forward to celebrating the fifth annual California Avocado Month!

 

From June 12-25, Gelson’s Markets will host avocado-based activities at most of its 25 locations. In addition to Friday-Saturday culinary demonstrations at various stores on June 16-17 and 23-24, there will be a Guacamole Battle which will “pit” the Service Deli vs. Produce in fun competition, an avocado-based Poke Taco concept in the Seafood Department, and potential visits by regional avocado farmers. Gelson’s guests can also participate in voting on the best avocado display, coloring contests and more.

GELSON’S TO CELEBRATE ONE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF PACIFIC BEACH STORE WITH FREE GROCERIES, BBQ & CAKE ON SATURDAY, MAY 27

 

Encino, Calif. (May 19, 2017) – Gelson’s Markets, one of California’s premier supermarket chains, is thrilled to celebrate the one-year anniversary of its Pacific Beach store on Saturday, May 27.

Taking place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the festivities will include samples from our barbeque grill in the parking lot along with anniversary cake for all patrons to enjoy. In addition to that, up to $100 in free groceries will be given away every hour, all day. Located at 730 Turquoise Street in San Diego, Gelson’s Pacific Beach serves the communities of Pacific Beach, Bird Rock and La Jolla. The store is one of eight locations that Gelson’s purchased from Haggen after that chain filed for bankruptcy in 2015. The Pacific Beach store, together with one in Del Mar and one in La Costa/Carlsbad, represents the first Gelson’s stores in San Diego County.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (January 23, 2017) - Roland Barthelemy, President of Guilde Internationale des Fromagers traveled from France to recognize and induct twelve cheese professionals from the U.S. on January 23, 2017 in San Francisco, CA during the 519th Chapter Induction during the International Fancy Food Show. The individuals inducted are considered not only experts in the making of cheese, but also experts in the production and preservation of standards, quality and education of fine cheese.

Included are some of the United States’ finest cheese makers, cheese mongers and food writers, all part of a group of dedicated culinary experts receiving the high honor. Twelve individuals were recognized at the first level of Garde et Jure of the Guilde Internationale de Fromagers. The ceremony celebrated the New World Chapter of the Guilde and the recognition of the New World Chapter Board composed of President and Ambassador Cathy Strange, Global Cheese Buyer, Ambassador and Vice-Presidents/Ambassadors David Gremmels, Owner/Cheese Maker, Rogue Creamery, OR, and Dominique Huth, CEO and President, Alouette Cheese, USA, PA. The organization members represent Mexico, the United States, Canada and Australia.

Mr. Pierre Androuët, a cheese maker, created the Guilde des Fromagers and Confrerie of Saint-Uguzon in 1969 in Dijon, France epicurean and intellectual with a degree in fine arts. The Guilde, for dairy professionals who were dedicated to preserving standards in cheese making throughout the world, and the Confrerie, for cheese aficionados and experts such as chefs, restaurateurs, food scientists and food journalists whose objective was to share their knowledge and the knowledge of the cheese makers.

GELSON’S ANNOUNCES SECOND-ANNUAL HOLIDAY TOY DRIVE AND BROADENS PARTNERSHIPS WITH LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS

All 25 Stores Take Part to Make the Season Brighter and Give Back to Local Communities

Encino, Calif. (November 30, 2016) – Gelson’s Markets, one of California’s premier supermarket chains, is proud to announce that it will hold its second-annual holiday toy drive across all of its 25 locations, from December 1-11, 2016.

Returning toy drive partner organizations include Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Children’s Hospital of Orange County, Ronald McDonald House/Long Beach, and Toys for Tots, joined by two additional partners, the Barbara Sinatra Center for Abused Children at Eisenhower Medical Center and Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego.

Based on its initial success in 2015, Gelson’s decided to extend the holiday toy drive into its second year to help local children who are ill or whose families may be facing financial hardship. The initial toy drive that started in 2015, was spurred by a Gelson’s employee whose son was seriously ill and has since regained his health. To personalize the experience, several Gelson’s employees will be visiting Children’s Hospital Los Angeles to hand out toys.

“We’re proud to extend our toy drive into its second year, and we’re grateful that even more partners are joining us to help local children in the giving spirit of the holidays,” offered Gelson’s President & CEO Rob McDougall. “We are absolutely committed to brightening the holiday season for families and especially the youngest members of the communities that we reside in.”

New and unwrapped toys for infants, children and adolescents are being collected. Gelson’s is only accepting NEW and UNWRAPPED gifts.

Suggestions include:

  • Infants to Age 5 – Rattles, Interactive crib toys/musicals, soft baby dolls, building blocks, balls, toys, educational books, educational toys, and bubbles.
  • Age 6 to Age 13 – Toys, playdoh, crafts, art supplies, colors, coloring books, toys, Super hero action figures, Hello Kitty items, bubbles, cars, dinosaurs, dolls, and Barbie’s.
  • Age 13 to Age 18 – Board games, make-up, nail polishes, LA Sports Team Sports Swag, Bath & Body Works sets for older girls, CD’s, Mp3 players, wallets, sport balls, white artist paper, markers, video games, and purses.
  • All Ages – Socks, slippers, hats, beanies, PJ’s, Gift cards, Movies, books, back packs/sports bags, blankets, and clothing.

Here is a list of items that Gelson’s cannot accept:

  • Stuffed toys or toys with small pellets or beans.
  • Toys should be sturdy and free of any parts which may pinch.
  • Please avoid toys which can break easily and leave sharp edges. (i.e. made of glass or brittle plastic)
  • Toys that are designed to promote aggressive behaviors (e.g. toy weapons of any kind nor violent video games or movies).

The Fro-Yo Spot Re-Opens Friday and is Nestled inside the Van Nuys Blvd Grocery Store

Sherman Oaks, Calif. (November 16, 2016) – Gelson’s Market announces the return of beloved frozen dessert shop Humphrey Yogart. Tucked inside the grocery store, Humphrey Yogart will serve its classic blended soy and frozen yogurts, along with ice cream, smoothies, and shakes.

In March 2016, the yogurt spot closed temporarily after serving Sherman Oaks for three decades. It proudly reopens inside the exact same grocery store that once shared a parking lot with the original Humphrey Yogart location.

GELSON’S LAUNCHES ANNUAL HOLIDAY FOOD DRIVE NOVEMBER 7-19

All 25 Stores Take Part with Local Organizations to Help Disadvantaged Families

Encino, Calif. (November 3, 2016) – Gelson’s Markets, one of California’s premier supermarket chains, will hold its annual Holiday season food drive from November 7-19. All 25 stores will participate in the food drive as part of Gelson’s commitment to contribute to the communities it serves, while also donating more than $2 million each year in products and cash to nonprofits focused on hunger.

Recurring partner organizations include AIDS Project Los Angeles, Food Finders, Food Share, La Cañada Community Center, Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, Second Harvest and Unity Shoppe. New food drive partners from recently acquired stores include Feeding San Diego and Rancho Mirage’s F.I.N.D. for the additional three San Diego locations. On weekends, volunteers from several of these organizations will visit area Gelson’s stores with lists of needed items; other stores will have bins where customers can donate items. Healthy (e.g., low-sodium, low-sugar), non-perishable foods are most needed, such as peanut and other nut butters, dried or canned beans, canned vegetables, canned meats/fish, canned fruit, whole grain cereal, whole grain pasta, soup, rice, granola bars, etc.

GELSON’S MARKETS TO CELEBRATE GRAND RE-OPENING OF SILVER LAKE LOCATION FROM OCTOBER 27 TO NOVEMBER 6 

Los Angeles, Calif. (October 17, 2016) – Gelson’s Markets, one of California’s premier supermarket chains, will reopen after completing an expansion and remodel of its Silver Lake location. The grand re-opening of the store, located at 2725 Hyperion Ave., will be celebrated from Thursday, October 27 through Sunday, November 6 with various events and customer giveaways/specials. 

The transformation of the Silver Lake Gelson’s includes beautiful new décor and energy efficient cases. Among the new features: 

  • Wolfgang Puck Express (featuring freshly made pizza, sandwiches, and salads) 
  • Gourmet cheese kiosk with expanded selection 
  • Craft beer and wine bar (featuring 24 beer taps and a menu created by Gelson’s Executive Chef, Peter Fiore)
  • Fresh squeezed juice and cut fruit kiosk (in the Produce Department) 
  • Service Meat case (coming soon) 

The Gelson’s Silver Lake store features an emphasis on fresh, great-tasting food across a wide spectrum, including grass-fed beef, organic and non-GMO items, and vegan, vegetarian and raw food options. 

The grand re-opening will commence on October 27 with a 9 a.m. ribbon cutting with the Silver Lake Chamber of Commerce and a check presentation to local non-profit partners. Recipients include Silver Lake Reservoirs Conservancy, P.A.T.H., the REAL bark, and Friends of the Observatory. Gelson’s will thank its first 200 customers with a special gift bag valued at $20. In addition, all customers will have the opportunity to sample featured merchandise and dishes throughout opening week. 

Festivities include free grocery giveaways from Thursday, October 27 to Sunday, October 30. Every hour, Gelson’s staff will announce over the intercom a check stand to win free groceries for patrons in line. On October 27 from 11am - 4 pm, and then October 28-30 from 11am -3 pm, there will be a BBQ. From October 27 to November 6, there will be extra demos and daily wine and beer tastings. Patrons are welcomed to participate in a food drive with local Gelson’s partner APLA (canned foods, non-perishable, boxed items). There will be balloons for children and face painting on Saturday and Sunday (October 29-30, November 5-6, 11 am-3 pm). Celebration pricing will take place for the duration of the eleven-day event along with a sweepstakes to win $1,000 in gift cards. Additionally, 2,000 reusable bags with pink ribbon artwork will be distributed with the promise that every time the bags are used over the next year, Gelson’s will donate 5 cents to City of Hope for cancer research.

Grown in Hatch, New Mexico, Hatch Chiles are a mildly hot yet savory pepper that, when perfectly roasted, yields a uniquely delicious flavor, both spicy and sweet. While the Hatch Chile Festival annually attracts thousands of visitors from around the world to this small farming community every Fall, Gelson’s brings its own festival to pepper-loving customers across Southern California. During a brief season each year, Gelson’s hosts “Hatch Chile Roasting Events” at a variety of locations. Sample Hatch Chile specialty items, learn about the growing process, and receive serving and cooking ideas from experts. LOS ANGELES (July 22, 2016) – Foodstirs, the new modern baking company, today announces their first retail partner, Southern California-based specialty grocery chain, Gelson’s. The nation’s first USDA organic, GMO-free line of baking kits and mixes will be available at all 24 Gelson’s locations beginning later this month and online at Foodstirs.com. Founded by Galit Laibow, Gia Russo and actor, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Foodstirs is re-making the baking experience through products using clean, direct-sourced ingredients that taste amazing. GELSON’S ADDRESSES NEIGHBORHOOD PARKING CONCERNS BY INCREASING OFFSITE EMPLOYEE PARKING FOR UPCOMING STORE IN MANHATTAN BEACH

 

Encino, Calif. (April 27, 2016) – Responding to the concerns of neighbors, Gelson’s has increased employee parking in its plans for a new store at 707 Sepulveda Boulevard in Manhattan Beach.

 

Gelson’s has finalized leases for two nearby lots, providing employee parking for a minimum of 40 cars, including a lot across Sepulveda accommodating 18 cars with the ability to further expand through stacked parking, as well as a second lot on 10th Street, off Sepulveda, to provide parking for appx. 23 vehicles. An additional five spaces for weekend employee parking has been secured on 6th Street.

 

Also developing incentives for employees to ride-share and/or take public transportation, Gelson’s has been working closely with developer Mark Harrigian and Paragon Commercial Group to ensure that neighborhood parking will not be impacted by the new store.

 

“We listened to the community’s concerns and worked to identify nearby leasing opportunities, providing sufficient employee parking with the goal of respecting residential space,” said Rob McDougall, Gelson’s president and CEO. “We look forward to serving the Manhattan Beach community and are excited about moving ahead with our new store soon.”

Encino, Calif. (April 18, 2016) – Gelson’s Markets, one of California’s premier supermarket chains, is pleased to announce that its new Laguna Beach store, at 30922 South Coast Highway, will celebrate its grand opening on Thursday, April 28.

 

The opening is part of Gelson’s plans, announced last year, to buy and relaunch eight Haggen grocery-store properties in Southern California. Haggen employees who worked at Laguna Beach prior to closing were able to retain their seniority and pay grades.

Grand Opening Event

 

Gelson’s Laguna Beach grand opening will take place at 9 a.m. on Thursday, April 28, at 30922 South Coast Highway, Laguna Beach, CA 92651, (949) 499-8130. There will be a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony held by the Laguna Beach Chamber of Commerce. The first 200 people in line will receive gift bags.

 

So far this year, Gelson’s has opened stores in Del Mar, Rancho Mirage, La Costa/Carlsbad, Santa Monica, and Ladera Ranch. Upcoming openings are: Laguna Beach (April 28), Pacific Beach/San Diego, and Thousand Oaks. These are the eight former Haggen properties.

 

Additionally, Gelson’s is gearing up to open new stores in Rancho Mission Viejo, Manhattan Beach, and a second location in Hollywood. This will bring Gelson’s total store count to 29.

The Gift of Giving

 

To celebrate Earth Day and in the spirit of giving, Gelson’s is donating $5,000 each to four “green” organizations including Heal the Bay, Tree People, Grades of Green, and San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy, to support their causes.

 

Gelson’s collects brown bag fees, as mandated by local legislation, in 14 of the 23 the chain operates today. The 10 cent per bag fee is charged to customers who opt to buy paper bags, rather than supply their own reusable bags, in communities where plastic bags are banned. The donation to the four non-profits was funded by the brown bag fees.

 

Rob McDougall, President and CEO of Gelson’s, noted, “While many of our customers have made the switch to reusable bags, some of our shoppers still elect to purchase paper bags. In recognition of Earth Day and the importance of conserving resources, we chose to dedicate funds to these four worthwhile organizations, who share a dedication to preserving our beautiful Southern California environment.”

Gelson's Commits To Converting All Private-Label Packaged Eggs To Cage-free In 2016

 

Gelson's Markets, one of California's premier supermarket chains, has announced that it will convert all of its private-label packaged eggs to cage-free this year. The company projects that close to 90% of its packaged egg sales will be cage-free by next year, with available eggs exclusively cage-free by 2020.

 

The majority of eggs sold at Gelson's are already cage-free, with a variety of selections from such brands as Vital Farms, Horizon Organic, Land O Lakes Organic, Happy Eggs, as well as Gelson's branded eggs. All of the new Gelson's cage-free eggs will be supplied by California farms.

 

"We have been working closely with the Humane Society and are excited to share the news," said Rob McDougall, Gelson's president and CEO. "We pride ourselves on offering customers a wide selection of products and those that are both health-conscious and ethically responsible, whether grass-fed beef, organic, non-GMO or vegan items. In response to increased consumer demand and the industry trend toward cage-free, we look forward to making this swift transition."
