Foods that Keep You Hydrated During the Summer
April 27, 2018
Staying hydrated is important all-year round, but is especially crucial during the summer months when high temperatures and long days in Southern California can easily result in heat exhaustion. While drinking water is a great way to keep yourself refreshed, it can get boring after a while. Liven up your diet by consuming some of the best foods for hydration, including these delicious fruits and vegetables.
Cucumbers
Cucumbers are one of the most hydrating foods, with a water content of over 90 percent. Not only do these vegetables help you stay hydrated, they can also flush out toxins in your body. Consider adding a few cucumbers to your salad or in your sandwiches as an easy way to increase your water intake without much effort.
Celery
If you are looking for a vegetable that is filled with water but also contains a ton of antioxidants, celery is the perfect one for you. When consumed regularly, it acts as an anti-inflammatory. Increasing your celery intake is incredibly easy. You can chop it up and toss it in your chili, soups, or stir-fried meals. It also makes a delicious snack when you add some cheese spread or peanut butter.
Tomatoes
Tomatoes are another incredibly hydrating food, containing close to 94 percent water. They are also filled with beta-carotene, which protects your skin from damage caused by exposure to the sun and other elements. You can add tomatoes to almost any meal or slice a few up for a snack.
Watermelon
Watermelon is a fantastic fruit for hydration. If you slice them up in advance and serve them out of the freezer, they make for a refreshing and healthy snack on a hot summer day. Not only are watermelon slices hydrating, they are filled with vitamin A and vitamin K.
Broccoli
There are numerous benefits to increasing the amount of broccoli in your diet. It is an excellent source of vitamin A, vitamin K, and vitamin C. Eating it raw gives you more hydration than once it is cooked. Try chopping some up and adding it to your salad or eating it with a healthy dip as a snack.
