Gelson’s carries a large variety of fresh turkeys. Follow these tips for selecting the perfect turkey this Thanksgiving.
Decide on a brand. If you are unsure of what kind of turkey to take home, ask the associate behind the meat counter. He can point you in the right direction quickly, especially if you know you want something in particular—let’s say organic or kosher. Remember, you can’t go wrong with any fresh Gelson’s Finest turkey: each one has been selected for quality and taste.
Look for a broad-breasted turkey.White breast meat is the most popular meat at Thanksgiving, so make sure the turkey you take home has a healthy topside.
Symmetry is important. Most turkeys are in bags that show the contour of the bird. Pick a turkey that looks proportional.
Purchase 1–1 1/2 pounds of turkey per person. If you like leftovers, err on the high end of this number.
Place your order in advance, and we will hold your turkey for you. We recommend ordering at least 10 days before Thanksgiving to ensure you will get your favorite turkey.
If you have a lot of guests coming,we suggest you try Diestel: you can get up to a 25 pound hen turkey, and they grow them especially juicy and broad breasted. Also available from Diestel: Petite and Heidi’s Hens Organic. Another popular brand is Shelton. They are available in Free Range (10–28 pounds) and Organic (10–18 pounds) varieties. Prairie brand turkeys are also organic (12–14 pounds).
A new trend in turkeysis the large-breasted Heritage breed, which we offer under the Heirloom brand. These turkeys have a very limited availabilty and size range.
For a kosher turkey, try the delicious Empire brand.
For a smoked turkey,we offer a Gelson’s Finest smoked variety (10–12 pounds).
California favoritesZacky Farms and Foster Farms turkeys are also featured in our Meat Department.
For something a little different this holiday, why not try our extensive selection of geese, capon, duck (including Long Island Duck, Shelton Duck, boneless duck breast, whole Moscovy ducks and boneless Moscovy duck breasts), pheasant or Turducken (a duck inside of a chicken inside of a turkey).
