Banana Walnut Oatmeal

Oats and bananas are a delicious, microbiota-loving combination.  They both contain prebiotics, substances that nourish the good bacteria in our large intestines (our microbiota).  Kefir is a probiotic dairy drink that contains a variety of good bacteria that can help keep your gut bacteria diverse to help you digest food, absorb nutrients, and boost your immune system.  See my January 2016 Nutrition Notes newsletter for more details about nourishing a robust microbiome.

Ingredients 

1 small ripe organic banana that is at least slightly soft to the touch
½ cup Organic Valley Grassmilk
1 packet Nature’s Path organic original instant oatmeal
¼ cup Flanigan Farms walnut halves and pieces
¼ teaspoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon Nutiva organic chia seeds
½ cup Green Valley Organics lactose free plain kefir

 Instructions

  1. Mash half of the banana in a microwave-safe bowl and stir in the milk.  Heat for 30 seconds on high heat in the microwave.  Stir in the oatmeal and walnuts.  Microwave for 30 more seconds.  Stir in cinnamon, chia seeds, and kefir. Dice remaining banana and stir into oatmeal.  Divide between two bowls and serve.
